Garden of Remembrance

How many of us have visited or passed the many War Memorials that dot the land in villages, towns and our cities and wondered about the men and women whose names are inscribed upon them. The War Memorial in Staple lies in the churchyard at St James Church Staple. Every year for the past 90 years or so, the villagers of Staple had congregated at the church on Remembrance Sunday and the names on the memorial would be read out with reverence and in respectful memory. Generations have come and gone in Staple since the Great War, and indeed even the 2nd World War, and very few people in Staple 2014 still had connections to those names. Sadly In the end, they were becoming just names.

In October 2013 the members of The Royal British Legion Staple Branch decided we should take a closer look and try to turn the pages of history back by re-connecting the Lost Sons of Staple with the village once again. The unfolding project, which saw the inclusion of many dedicated villagers, children and Branch members within the task, came to fruition in September of 2014. The project culminated in a spectacular celebration of these fallen men with an evening of poetry music and drama, and then finally, the dedication of a special site within the village as a Remembrance Garden.

The amount of work and research that was carried out is now reflected within this web site and I believe the viewer will agree that we have indeed completed our task. The Lost Sons of Staple have been reawakened from their historical slumber and are once more reconnected with the village.
